Mariana Andros, a brilliant but troubled therapist, becomes fixated on a group of female students at Cambridge University known as "The Maidens" when one of their members is found murdered. The group adores Edward Fosca, a Greek tragedy professor, but Mariana is convinced that he is guilty of the murder. When another body is found, Mariana's obsession with proving Fosca's guilt spirals out of control, threatening to destroy her credibility as well as her closest relationships.
